Knowledge, Logical Omniscience, and Resource-bounded Reasoning

چکیده
Agent theories typically use modal epistemic logic for modeling knowledge of agents. Since the modal approach to epistemic logic cannot formalize resource-bounded reasoning adequately, it it not suited to describe realistic, implementable agents. We develop a framework for solving that problem. We introduce the notion of algorithmic knowledge — a concept that establishes a direct link between and agent’s available resources and his knowledge. We show that our concept of knowledge is useful for modeling resource-bounded agents. Moreover, because a resource-bounded agent is naturally not logically omniscient, all variants of the logical omniscience problem are solved intuitively within our framework.

Logics for resource-bounded agents
In this thesis, I criticise traditional epistemic logics based on possible worlds semantics, inspired by Hintikka, as a framework for representing the beliefs and knowledge of agents. The traditional approach suffers from the logical omniscience problem: agents are modelled as knowing all consequences of their knowledge, which is not an admissible assumption when modelling real-world reasoning ...
متن کاملLogical Omniscience and the Cost of Deliberation
Logical omniscience is a well known problem which makes traditional modal logics of knowledge, belief and intentions somewhat unrealistic from the point of view of modelling the behaviour of a resource bounded agent. We propose two logics which take into account ‘deliberation time’ but use a more or less standard possible worlds semantics with classical possible worlds.
متن کاملRepresenting Knowledge of Resource-bounded Agents
We suggest a novel way for formalizing knowledge and belief of intelligent agent and argue that this is the notion we need to formalize agents in Distributed Artificial Intelligence. We introduce the notion of algorithmic knowledge — a concept that is suited for establishing a direct link between and agent’s available resources and his knowledge. We show that our concept of knowledge is useful ...
متن کاملA Logic for Reasoning about Explicit Knowledge in Finite Agents (Abstract)
The Problem Epistemic logics are logics for reasoning about knowledge in systems of agents. Traditional modal epistemic logics are information-theoretical, in the sense that they consider knowledge about propositions and that agents know everything that follows from the information they possess. Although proved useful in many applications, this view is unrealistic when modeling explicit knowled...
متن کاملThinking Takes Time: a Modal Active-logic for Reasoning in Time Thinking Takes Time: a Modal Active-logic for Reasoning in Time
Most common sense reasoning formalisms do not account for the passage of time as the reasoning occurs, and hence are inadequate from the point of view of modeling an agent's ongoing process of reasoning. We present a modal active-logic that treats time as a valuable resource that is consumed in each step of the agent's reasoning. We provide a sound and complete characterization for this logic a...
